(upside down pic of boxster because I flipped mine...)

Wife has decided she wants a convertible. Previously she had a boxster which we both loved, so that is sort of the baseline. I really don’t want to spend more than 15k or so. She also was looking at 08-09 335i convertibles. Any other suggestions to look at? Needs to be an auto too, and something with bluetooth. That is it (I think)

She had a Boxster, not an MG.

2015 Abarth Convertible is offered with an automatic, and can be had for 17-18k :)

Under 15k is tough if she is coming from a Boxter. Outside of the 3-series this is all I got. 2011 Saab.

Unfortunately the Muranos are still selling in the 20s.

Just spitballing here, but CLK, Z4, Saturn Sky Redline...

Well, the NC Miata is a fine car which can be had with auto. You’re comparing to the Boxster in what terms: athleticism, luxury, cachet, power...? There’s nothing out there really like the Boxster. Audi TT? BMW Z3/4...

Infiniti makes convertibles, not sure of pricing. Same with the Nissan Z. Mustang, Camaro have convertible versions.

As far as Bluetooth goes, I wouldn’t let that dictate; I’ve put Bluetooth HU’s in my last two cars. Only concern would be poor aftermarket HU compatibility.

Miata was actually my first choice, I was willing to go over budget and get an ND too, I think they’re gorgeous (junior ftype) but she is anti-miata. Same thing with mustang, won’t even consider it. I’ve found a couple of cheaper C5 vettes but she said no because that would really be a car for me.

Boxster - athleticism & power (so even there, no so much). Not so much on luxury, hers was a 986...

How good are the Zs? Really don’t know much about the new ones

That and miata were my initial reactions, but no go. I think because they were both popular cars at the high school she went to, I can’t get a good reason why not

Oh yeah, probably not a match, but there is the MR2 Spyder.

Actually, give that a shot. Mid-engine like the Boxster, sporty feel, very light. The one huge shortfall is cargo space, of which there is next to none.

Oh man I forgot about that thing. I love the 2nd gen Mr2s (had one for a few glorious months before it threw a rod), definitely worth a shot. I heard the handling is amazing too

Z4

Actually just get the Z4 with the 3.0si. Dont ever get a convertible that used to have a roof, it just looks bad. Get a proper roadster.

Take a look at Pontiac solstices. But only the gxp’s. If you try a 4 cylinder you’ll be sadly disappointed.

Also note, this would have to be an A-to-A car. There is probably 6-7 cubic feet of storage.

But they drive ok have mod potential. are gm cars, so won’t cost an arm and a leg. and they’re rare

And they look pretty sweet too.

2011 9-3 Aero 44k miles. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Saab-9-3-A…

My mom has the same car except hers is just the 2.0 turbo. She definitely overpaided for hers because she was set on buying a Saab convertible, but it has been a great car overall with no real problems except a small hiccup with the transmission. It is a fun sporty car to drive and very manageable around town. My mom bought hers 2 years ago for $30k with 30k miles on it, this one is a bargain by those standards.

A bit of a stretch, but this is what I’d get if I was forced to sell/flip my 986 and go slushbox.

She really likes the z4, and we’ve found a couple of sweet 335i hardtop verts. Maintenance seems like it could be a pain in the ass but i *think* I could work on a lot of it myself. And they look damn good. Wish the 2011 335is was in budget...

Totally agree on the appearance, hard to pull that off apparently.

Urrrgh the early 2000s merc interiors are so awful. Even compared to a 986.

We keep going back to 986...

No I’m talking about the E85 Z4 3.0si. They were made from 06-08. They should be in budget at a private sale. Around 10-15k for low mileage, great condition 3.0si. That is the engine to get.

Not the 335is vert.

Cheap to buy, but usually not cheap to own. Even if you wrench it yourself, ze Zuffenhausen bits can add up quickly on a 15 year old car.

Still worth it.

We had 2, both 99s with 50k+ miles, no warranty. One was a total lemon and was in the shop every month. The other had a failed water pump once over 3 years, besides that just had to do normal maint like brakes
